Museum of the Moon

Coming in March 2025

St Canice's Cathedral & Round Tower is set to unveil the Museum of the Moon, a breath-taking installation by artist Luke Jerram, on March 10th, 2025, for an exclusive three-week exhibit. 

The Museum of the Moon, a large-scale installation, will dominate the cathedral, dramatically suspended three metres from the ground above head height. The luminous artwork features detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface.

Luke Jerram Artist Statement

Luke Jerram's multidisciplinary practice involves the creation of sculptures, installations and live arts projects. Living in the UK but working internationally since 1997, Jerram has created a number of extraordinary art projects which have excited and inspired people around the world. In 2023 alone, he had over 115 exhibitions in 27 different countries, visited by more than 3 million people. Luke creates artworks at all scales, that deliver messages and inspire communities to recognise often challenging concepts. With many of his latest artworks, including Gaia, Oil Fountain and This Way Forward, Jerram has been using his skills in visual communication to draw attention to planetary health. The artwork Museum of the Moon is one of Luke’s most successful projects to catch the public’s imagination, so far it has been presented in different ways, more than 300 times in 30 different countries. Experienced by more than 20 million people worldwide, the artwork has toured India with the British Council, been presented at the Commonwealth Games in Australia, Art Basel in Miami and exhibited in Aarhus, Denmark for the European Capital of Culture. Over 2 million people visited the artwork when it was presented at the National History Museum, making it one of their most popular exhibits ever! Over the course of its 12-year tour, his celebrated street pianos installation ‘Play Me, I’m Yours’ was presented in over70 cities and has been enjoyed by more than 10 million people worldwide. Launched by the French Minister of Culture in Paris and Mayor Bloomberg in NYC, the installation received press coverage in almost every newspaper and television station around the globe. During this time, Luke installed over 2,000 street pianos, but his project has also been copied by many organisations, creating a global movement of pianos being installed in public places for people to play. The idea for Play Me I’m Yours, has now become part of contemporary culture with street pianos found in most cities around the globe. Jerram is known worldwide for his large-scale public engagement artworks. In 2014,Luke’s giant installation Park and Slide made international headline news, creating 500 news stories reaching an estimated 1 billion people worldwide. Luke’s Glass Micro biology artworks are in museum collections around the world including The Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC), Shanghai Museum of Glass, Wellcome Collection (London) and Corning Museum of Glass (USA). Throughout 2020 his sculptures of Covid-19, were used by the worldwide press, to communicate the nature of the pandemic. Luke Jerram lives in Bristol UK with his wife and two children.     From the unique storytelling minds of MórScéal in association with St Canice's Cathedral comes the world premiere of The Nine Moons of Ago a special theatrical experience for three nights only this March. 

    The Nine Moons of Ago, tailormade to be performed under The Museum of the Moon the breath-taking installation by artist Luke Jerram, which features detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface is written by Georgina Brennan-Stynes with Michael Somers directing and Willie Ryan producing. 

    Set in an ancient village populated by field fairies, werewolves of Ossary and their Divine King, villagers turn the celtic wheel as the Holly King and Oak Queen battle for power in a unique theatrical experience where darkness is illuminated by the light.

    The Nine Moons of Ago offers a spectacular performance exploring ancient lunar tales, traditions, folklore and the mythology of the eight Celtic festivals and supermoon superstition through drama, music and dance featuring local actors and musicians.

    St Patrick’s Festival and Kilkenny Tradfest have come together to combine music, art and amazing food in the unique setting of St Canice’s Cathedral with their temporary exhibition of the stunning touring artwork ‘Museum Of The Moon’ by UK artist Luke Jerram. Guests will listen to music by The Half Room, featuring Pauline Scanlon while enjoying an exquisite 3 course wine paired meal, catered by Langton’s Hotel. This will be a unique dining ad musical experience, celebrating our national festival weekend.

    Tickets for this event are €10 per child, parents/ guardians are free but need to remain in attendance for the event 

    Join children's writer Niamh Donnellan in a fantastical journey to the moon and back. From aliens to robots, jumping cows to stinky cheese the moon is a busy place if you just use your imagination!

    In this interactive workshop, Niamh will read her new children's story inspired by Museum of the Moon an installation by Luke Jerram. Children can look at the moon through a real telescope and then make their own!

    Niamh Donnellan is a children's writer living in Co. Kilkenny. Her debut picture book Little Irish Folklore Friends was published in 2024.

    Tickets for this event are €10 per child, parents/ guardians are free but need to remain in attendance for the event 

    Join us for a sensory play event at St. Canice’s Cathedral on Monday 24th March. Children will enjoy an all-encompassing sensory experience under Luke Jerram’s art installation Museum of the Moon. The sensory play event will be a celestial theme to connect with this impressive art work, that will be on display in the Cathedral from 10th March – 30th March. The event will allow children to immerse themselves in self directed creative play in a unique environment.

    Parents / guardians must remain present with their child at all times.

    A Programme of solo piano music inspired by Museum of the Moon.

    A programme of solo piano music inspired by Luke Jerram’s lunar installation, Museum of the Moon, will be held on Saturday, March 29th, at 8pm. This special event marks the closing night of the installation's visit to St Canice’s Cathedral, fittingly coinciding with the New Moon.

    Esteemed classical pianist David McEntee will present a carefully curated programme inspired by Jerram’s work. The recital will feature Debussy’s iconic Clair de Lune, Beethoven’s celebrated Moonlight Sonata, compositions by Grieg and Sibelius, and selections from beloved film scores.

    Originally from Belfast, David McEntee is a distinguished concert pianist now based in the Burren, Co. Clare. With over two decades of experience teaching piano and music theory, he holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Cork School of Music (2009–2013), where he specialised in piano performance and pedagogy. He also holds a Diploma in Teaching and Performance from the Royal Irish Academy of Music (2007–2008). David has studied with prominent figures including Dearbhla Collins, Réamonn Keary, and John O’Conor. At the Cork School of Music, he received mentorship from Nicholas O’Halloran and head of department Gabriela Mayer, while also gaining conducting experience under Alan Cutts.

     

    David is an accomplished soloist who has performed on prestigious stages, including the Mendelssohn Remise in Berlin, where he delivered a programme of works by Beethoven and Liszt. He is the recipient of numerous awards from piano competitions across Ireland, including in Dublin, Sligo, Wicklow, and Cork. Additionally, he has participated in masterclasses with internationally acclaimed pianists such as Barry Douglas and Pavel Nersessian.

    Moon Music, an orchestral reimagining of Coldplay’s most iconic songs, will be presented by the OneOrchestra Group at St Canice’s Cathedral. Set beneath Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon, this performance merges orchestral music with visual art to create a rare, immersive experience.

    This collaboration between music, space, and light offers a fresh perspective on Coldplay’s music, bringing it into a new context where every detail is enhanced by the environment. This performance is not just a concert — it’s a complete sensory experience, where the music, setting and atmosphere come together to create something truly special.
